Innovation & Commersialisation

As Malaysia transitions into a knowledge-based economy, research institutions like FRIM will need to play a strategic role to create new knowledge from its science and technology activities and to generate income from such intellectual capital. In the new economy, intellectual capital is the only sustainable factor of production.

FRIM wishes to harness its position as cutting edge research organisation and a knowledge engineering powerhouse to create intellectual capital in the form of innovative products, services, processes and methodologies that the market demand and value.

The Innovation & Commercialisation Division (ICD) is in the business of managing FRIM’s vast intellectual property– protecting, exploiting and expending the portfolio in an increasingly competitive IP-driven economy.

FRIM’s long-term commercialisation strategy is to continue to focus on its core competency of doing research, while leaving the push to the marketplace to strategic partners. FRIM may be able to leverage on its expertise and knowhow in the forest-related industry, but continuously seeks partners that can provide manufacturingexperiences, funding, market accessibility, and further product development capabilities.

Through an integrated, holistic and structured commercialisation strategy, FRIM would assist the government to boost the capacity of forest-related industry to create new products and services that would generate higher revenue, create new skills and more jobsfor the masses.

Intellectual Property

FRIM takes pride in its innovations and is in line for a strategic shift towards learning and knowledge creation whichwill bring about positive changes inthe form of product, service or process resulting in positiveimpact to the economy, business, public service delivery system, social well-being or the environment.

ICD has a role in FRIM to manage its intellectual property portfolio. After the value creation process of discovery, technical development and product conception by the R&D divisions, ICD will secure and protect those values through proactive IP management. Further financial value will be added from collaborations with industrial and commercial partners through commercialisation, product launching, market penetration, sales growth and branding.

For investments, collaboration or furtherance of IP development, please contact the Head of Commercialisation & Incubation at +603-6279 7509.

Lab to Market

Innovations at FRIM have undergone extensive research and developmental phase conducted by well-qualified scientist using high quality materials, equipment and facilities. They will also have to satisfyavailableethical, legal and regulatory frameworks. FRIM, as a knowledge-based organisation, has identified that its commercialisation needs to be driven primarily by its IPR (intellectual property rights) strategy. In broad terms, the typical commercialisation options open to FRIM are:
  1. Licensing
  2. Assignment
  3.  Start-up/Spin off Company
  4.  Collaboration
For more information on each of the options, please contact the Head of Commercialisation & Incubation at +603-6279 7509.

Consultancy/Contract Research

The purpose of FRIM’s Consultancy Service is toprovide the community with commercial research services by its panel of qualified experts who have considerable knowledge and experience in their field of study. Consultancy Service has typically been given to the forest-related sector and forest products industry. Interested parties who have a research proposition in mind can communicate directly withthe researcher, or can alternatively request through ICD. ICD will hold preliminary discussions with the researcher and the client to get a clearer picture on the consultancy service to be rendered, and will then prepare the agreement documentation. If agreed upon, the consultancy service chargeswill be borne by the client, including professional fees to the researcher, operational expenses and FRIM’s management and administration costs. Consultancy services or contract research will not affect IP ownership because of the nature of the contractual arrangement.
