FORESTRY IN MALAYSIA

LOWLAND EVERGREEN RAIN FORESTS

  1. Lowland Dipterocarp Forests

  • Keruing (Dipterocarpus) forests

On some of the poorer drained land in north Johore, central, east and south Pahang, east (e.g. Palong F.R.) and west (e.g. Sg. Menyala F.R.) Negeri Sembilan, the Kinta and Batang Padang districts of Perak and the northern part (e. g. Belara F.R.) of Terengganu, extensive areas of forest are found characterised by Dipterocarpus spp., principally D. apterus (very local, mainly central Johore), D. baudii, D. cornutus, D. costulatus, D. crinitus, D. lowii and D. verrucosus, and which are often associated with Dryobalanops oblongifolia, Hopea mengarawan and Shorea lepidota. Other common species are Koompassia malaccensis and Palaquium spp. Much of the area is slightly waterlogged at certain times of the year and this type might be regarded as marginal lowland dipterocarp forest, freshwater alluvial swamp forest and riparian fringe forest. The height of the upper tree layer is less than that in Red Meranti-keruing forest and this layer is frequently very discontinuous with the large trees resembling true emergents.
